Grey and Silver: Old Battersea Reach

James McNeill Whistler

Painted
1863
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

The chimneys and boats of Battersea seen across the Thames from Whistler's house in Chelsea, 1863. An early example of his musical titles made of colour names; he insisted a painting was an arrangement of colour, not a story. Sails and chimneys between grey water and silver sky are the anchors.
