Ruined Archway

Francesco Guardi

Painted
1775–93
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

An imaginary scene from Guardi's last years: lagoon and boats seen through a ruined ancient arch. Ruins were a fashion in eighteenth-century Europe, and Guardi liked to turn real Venetian buildings into them. The brown brick of the arch contrasts with the brightness of the sky beyond.
