The Ten Largest, No. 1, Childhood
Hilma af Klint
The first of Hilma af Klint's The Ten Largest (1907), a series on the four ages of life: childhood, youth, adulthood and old age. On a deep blue ground a wreath of white petals meets a cluster of pink rose circles, orange lines loop below like handwriting, and a row of yellow and blue half-discs runs along the bottom. Believing the world was not yet ready, she asked that her abstract work stay unseen for twenty years after her death.
