Wind God and Thunder God

Tawaraya Sōtatsu

Painted
c. 1630
Collection
Kennin-ji, Kyoto

At the two ends of a pair of gold screens the Wind God with his sack of wind and the Thunder God with his ring of drums face each other on clouds. Leaving the centre empty creates the tension of the two gods rushing toward each other, and the clouds are made with pooled ink. A National Treasure kept at Kennin-ji in Kyoto, copied again and again by later painters.
