A Girl with a Watering Can

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Painted
1876
Collection
National Gallery of Art, Washington

A little girl in a blue dress trimmed with lace stands on a garden path with a watering can and looks out at us. The flowers and leaves behind dissolve into dabs of colour that melt into her figure, and the red of her ribbon and buttons gives the picture its accent. It is the brightest and most endearing of Renoir's paintings of children.
