Proserpine, captured by the king of the underworld, stands holding the pomegranate she has bitten: because she ate it she must spend half of every year below. The model was Jane Morris, the wife of a friend, whom Rossetti loved, and he painted the subject eight times. The ivy and the shaft of light hint at the upper world she cannot regain.
