Vertumnus

Giuseppe Arcimboldo

Painted
1591
Collection
Skokloster Castle, Sweden

The Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II dressed as Vertumnus, god of the seasons, his whole face assembled from fruit, vegetables and flowers: a pear for a nose, apples for cheeks, ears of wheat for eyebrows. The emperor was delighted, taking it as an emblem of abundance and harmony rather than an insult. The Surrealists rediscovered it four centuries later.
