Moulin de la Galette

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Painted
1889
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

The Montmartre dance hall that Renoir had painted bright and cheerful thirteen years earlier, repainted by Lautrec in 1889 with dark, indifferent faces. The women at the front table glance sideways rather than dance, and the floor behind is a blur. His Paris sees the boredom behind the pleasure.
