The central canvas of the murals Munch painted for the assembly hall of the University of Oslo: the sun rises over the sea and floods the picture with rays. Free of the anxiety of "The Scream", Munch made the Norwegian coast at morning an emblem of vitality and hope on a canvas almost eight metres wide.
