Biscuits Lefèvre-Utile

Alphonse Mucha

Painted
1896
Collection
National Gallery of Art, Washington

A poster for the Nantes biscuit maker Lefèvre-Utile (LU), one of many designs Mucha made for the firm. A blonde woman with red poppies and ears of wheat in her hair, dressed in grey, holds up a plate of biscuits; below her a calendar for 1897 opens like a fan, and the LU monogram sits at the right. The dense lines of the fan calendar and the red poppies are landmarks, while the patterned grey dress is solved by its texture.
