Night with her Train of Stars

Edward Robert Hughes

Painted
1912
Collection
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

Hughes’s best-known painting, made in 1912 and now in Birmingham. Night, personified as a blue-winged woman, passes by carrying sleeping infants; the picture is often read as being about the loss of a child. Deep indigo covers the surface with pale forms scattered through it, so linking up the light points is the way in.
