The cliff of Hautepierre in the Loue valley near Courbet's hometown of Ornans, painted around 1869. He laid the paint on thick with a palette knife to build the texture of rock, and green forest and pale grey cliff divide the canvas top from bottom. He painted this valley dozens of times in his life.
