Children painted by Sophie Gengembre Anderson, French by birth and English by career. In a period when a woman could hardly be accepted as a professional painter, she made a place for herself by exhibiting steadily at the Royal Academy. The children’s clothes are all different colours, so you can build them one figure at a time.
