Los supervivientes de una tormenta que ha durado toda la noche se aferran al amanecer a un trozo de mástil mientras se les viene encima la «novena ola», que los marinos creían la mayor. Y sin embargo el sol naciente tiñe cielo y agua de oro y violeta, y el cuadro habla más de esperanza que de desesperación. Es la obra maestra de Aivazovski, el mayor pintor ruso del mar.
