An illustration by Jessie Willcox Smith for the 1922 Heidi. She trained under Howard Pyle in Philadelphia and became one of the foremost painters of children, producing over two hundred magazine covers. The dark shade of the trees by the hut sets off Heidi’s red skirt, so the centre of the picture is never in doubt.
