Madame Paul Escudier (Louise Lefevre)

John Singer Sargent

Painted
1882
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

Painted in Paris in 1882 by the twenty-six-year-old Sargent: a woman in black stands against the light between curtains, melting into the dark. Only face, hands and the white curtain are bright, the rest brown shadow, a clear debt to Velázquez. With so many dark pieces you will match by tab shape.
