The Colosseum, Rome

The outer wall of the Colosseum in the 1890s. The square now packed with tourists was then a quiet road with a single carriage and a few passers-by. The contrast between the collapsed and intact sides and the evening light running along the arches bring home the size of the two-thousand-year-old building.
